Playing on Strengths
I have found that the best way to think about the next generation of in-game advertising is to not look at the negatives of the current offerings but to instead list out the strengths of each medium and build on those. This way it is easier to find the similarities of both art forms and have them do a little co-op play. Video...

No banner ads here
Tap Me is fighting the good fight so games that have an ad model like Angry Birds don’t have to piss off their gamers. This is why the next generation of in game ads have should be designed and developed by game developers. Stay tuned for a breakdown of current methods of in game ads.

The Next Gen of In-Game Advertising
by: Joshua Hernandez [I will be doing a series of posts on what we are calling the next generation of in-game advertising. Please leave your thoughts and comments below.] The in-game ads space had it’s circus mid last decade. To the outside world it might appear that they failed to significantly scale or simply meet expectations culminating in MS shuttering Massive this Fall. I am sure the...

The Reason Why...
by: Joshua Hernandez In my past startups I was very vocal; had daily posts on SectionZ.com before the word blog was invented. There I rallied thousands of artists to band together to help them get feedback on electronic music they had in the oven. Over a decade later, that communal cement is still strong, even long after my departure. In fact, it was the community that really made it work. ...

We're Kind Of A Big Deal...
Last week, I got the chance to attend an advanced screening of The Social Network. There were a few key moments in the film that I believe are relevant to anyone in a startup, particularly in the tech scene.  One of the major tension points in the film arises from Mark Zuckerberg’s partner Eduardo Saverin’s desire to monetize Facebook with ads. It’s hard to criticize this...

My Game is NOT a website. The web is dead.
Is the Web dead? We think so, our motto is “my game is NOT a website” which we sported at GDC 2010. Let me explain: First here is a Wired quote: “Sure, we’ll always have Web pages. We still have postcards and telegrams, don’t we? But the center of interactive media — increasingly, the center of gravity of all media — is moving to a post-HTML environment, … but the point was...

A definition of Engagement
Engagement: Engagement can be measured in many ways. It is important as a metric for social media because media is consumed in 2 way channels, unlike the 1 way channels of the broadcast era that is rapidly fading. One way we at Tap Me like to measure engagement is with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (Deci and Ryan, 1985 http://www.getcited.org/pub/102451985 ). Intrinsic motivation is...

(Fail) Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
I recently watched an episode of Penn & Teller’s ‘BS’ on Showtime that was all about old people.  No, no they weren’t saying that old people are BS, but they did a fine job of demonstrating just how much our attitude towards them (in American culture) is.  From the way they drive, to the ‘old people smell,’ to their sex lives etc.  What does this have to do...

You're Doing It All Wrong: The One Thing Not to... →
I’m protective of a lot of things in this world — life, liberty, justice, my desire to one day own a 150 foot tall tower filled entirely with Lindt chocolate truffles. These things I would defend with my dying breath. The one thing I am absolutely not protective of, that I care as much for as…

You’ve met the incredible Bill Guschwan, now get ready for me!  My name is David Ballard - Co-Founder at TapMe, Inc.  Shortly after dropping out of community college, I spent the first few years of my adult life working various jobs that I hated - at various levels of compensation.  One day, while working one such job, my girlfriend (now wife) called me to tell me about a new media arts...

An Apple-endorsed Macintosh Game article
This is Bill “Angus” Guschwan and I am introducing myself. I work at Tap Me Inc., and our product is an ad unit that sponsors gameplayers. It is the first ad unit designed for the needs of social casual games. I thought it would be good to share my disruptive past. Here is a link to my article on “how to write directly to the screen” on the Macintosh. When I wrote it in...
